Pray this Lazaroo with focused resolve:

“…the women are to be…temperate and trustworthy in everything.”
(1 Timothy 3:11)

Of course, Jesus.

So are the men.

You don’t want me to be a fit-thrower, a drunkard

wild or unbalanced.

It pleases You when I exercise self-control.

You want me to be the kind of person who can be trusted

with other people’s money and secrets
to show up when I say I will

to refuse temptation
even when I don’t think I’ll get caught.

Pray this Lazaroo with pedal-to-the-metal commitment:

“…encourage the young men to be self-controlled.”
(Titus 2:6)

Of course, all of us need to be self-controlled, Jesus

not just young men

but also young women, older women, older men.

Perhaps that’s because it’s harder for a young man to learn…

not to mention so very important.

I love the word, “encourage,” though!

Not simply a gruff command

but using words that explain
offer helpful examples
give incentive
inspire hope

letting these young men know:

They can do this!

…and so can I.

Pray this Lazaroo with laser-focused intensity:

“…the older women…can train the younger women…to be self-controlled…”
(Titus 2:3-5)

Yes, they can, Jesus…

provided the older women are themselves self-controlled.

It’s somewhat difficult
to teach something you don’t do.

It’s also extremely helpful for younger women
to see self-control modeled day after day.

Of course, the other side of the equation

is that the younger women must be willing to be taught.

Self-control is hard!

They’ve got to passionately desire it
and be willing to pay the price.

Pray this Lazaroo in wisdom, self-control and total trust:

“…forfeiting your life.”
(Habakkuk 2:10)

That seems incomprehensible, Jesus!

Why would anyone forfeit his life?
Why would she throw away something so precious?

But people do it all the time. Why?

Because Your gracious gift of life can become soiled, feel ruined

by sin…pain…sickness…fear…hatred…loss.

And in the darkness that our emotions and Satan himself brings

people can lose hope
abandon perspective
think irrationally

act hastily…foolishly.

But You’re the Giver of life!

My life is not my own to take.

Pray this Lazaroo with bottomless trust:

“Teach the older men to be…self-controlled…”
(Titus 2:2)

I have to confess, Jesus –

this one’s a surprise.

I don’t mean that older men shouldn’t be self-controlled.

They absolutely should!

But I would’ve thought you’d say that’s something the younger men need to learn.

Oh, wait a minute – you do say that – four verses later.

So why do you tell the older men first?

I guess it’s so they’ll be able to show the younger men
what self-control looks like.

Pray this Lazaroo in Godly self-control:

“…does not keep a tight rein on his tongue…”
(James 1:26)

You know how hard it is for anyone to control their tongue, Jesus!

and I’m no exception.

Oh, I think I do all right most of the time…

but that’s not good enough, is it?

Like the rider of a horse that can suddenly buck and gallop away out of control

I’ve got to constantly be on my guard
every time I saddle up to open my mouth.
