Pray this Lazaroo with immediate correction:

“All those who came out of Egypt—all the men of military age—died in the wilderness on the way after leaving Egypt. All the people that came out had been circumcised, but all the people born in the wilderness during the journey from Egypt had not.”
(Joshua 5:4-5)

Why do I put off doing the right thing, Jesus?

Why don’t I instantly obey?

It’s a spirit of rebellion, isn’t it?

Disguising my disobedience behind:

“Yes, I’m going to do it…but not right now.”

Away with that ugly sin, LORD!

This very moment: I choose You!

Pray this Lazaroo with burning emotion:

“Joab…sent messengers after Abner…But David did not know it. Now when Abner returned to Hebron, Joab took him aside into an inner chamber, as if to speak with him privately. And there, to avenge the blood of his brother Asahel, Joab stabbed him in the stomach, and he died.”
(2 Samuel 3:26-27)

Joab was a mighty warrior and general, Jesus

but he had an ugly, murderous streak.

Rid me of everything You find in me

that would bring dishonor to Your Name!

Pray this Lazaroo with eyes wide open:

“Who is the liar? It is whoever denies that Jesus is the Christ.”
(1 John 2:22)

That clears up a few things, Jesus.

The atheist is a liar.

So when the atheist marshals their arguments against You

underneath every statement, every carefully-chosen fact
is hidden a deeply ugly secret:

The atheist isn’t seeking truth.

The atheist is desperately searching for a way
to escape Your authority over their life.

But their attempts are futile.

For one day soon they will stand before You

condemned.

Pray this Lazaroo in devoted passion:

“When Jonah’s warning reached the king of Nineveh, he rose from his throne, took off his royal robes, covered himself with sackcloth…”
(Jonah 3:6)

Kings wore the finest of clothing, Jesus

made from the most expensive fabrics
tailored to fit them perfectly

designed to convey the idea that they were special –
in a different class from those wearing common attire.

But when a king donned plain, ugly sackcloth

he was totally humbling himself

which is what I do before You every day.

Pray this Lazaroo with burning zeal:

“…the LORD alone will be exalted in that day, and the idols will totally disappear.”
(Isaiah 2:17)

Oh, how I long for that day, Jesus!

when I finally rid myself of the idols
that continue to lurk inside my heart.

I’m repulsed by the graven images I see all around the world.

But the ugliest and most detestable false gods of all

are those things in my life that to this very day
I catch myself putting ahead of You.

Pray this Lazaroo with over-the-top trust:

“…rid yourselves of all…envy…”
(1 Peter 2:1)

It’s the green-eyed monster, isn’t it, Jesus?

Wanting what somebody else has
until its acid eats away the “lining” of my spirit

robbing me of my joy
becoming an obsession
keeping me awake nights
turning me into something ugly and repulsive.

What’s the antidote?

Your contentment!

brought about by trusting in You
to supply everything I need

knowing You love me way too much
to withhold anything good that is truly best.

Pray this Lazaroo with explosive feeling:

“…remember that at that time you were…without hope and without God in the world.”
(Ephesians 2:12)

It’s vital to remember that, Jesus!

Sometimes I get so wrapped up in my problems
that I’m tempted to envy the lifestyles of unbelievers.

That’s when I most need to recall what it was like when I was in the same boat they’re in.

It was downright ugly!

I never want to return to the empty, hopeless existence

that is life without You.

Pray this Lazaroo in humble adulation:

“…loved by the Lord…”
(2 Thessalonians 2:13)

Still blows my mind, Father!

Jesus loves me this I know
for the Bible tells me so.

Why, Jesus?

How can You love a sinner like me?

Because of the evil I’ve done

Your love for me cost You Your life
an ugly, excruciatingly painful, humiliating

death on the cross.

They laughed at You, taunted You, ridiculed You
slapped You, beat You, despised You

because of me.

Your incomprehensible love!

demands mine.

Pray this Lazaroo with outrageous adoration:

“Christ Jesus, who gave himself as a ransom for all people. “
(1 Timothy 2:5-6)

Those last two words, Jesus:

all people.”

Not merely the rich, famous or powerful.

all people.”

Not just deacons, elders and pastors.

all people.”

Not only the beautiful, talented and likable.

all people.”

You gave Yourself as a ransom

for poor people, nobodies and powerless
waiters, stockbrokers and nurses
ugly people, clumsy and obnoxious

and for me! – the least deserving of

all people.”
