Pray this Lazaroo with sold-out surrender:

“Better a poor but wise youth than an old but foolish king who no longer knows how to heed a warning. The youth may have come from prison to the kingship, or he may have been born in poverty within his kingdom. I saw that all who lived and walked under the sun followed the youth, the king’s successor.”
(Ecclesiastes 4:13-15)

What a tragedy, Jesus

that Solomon didn’t apply his own proverb to himself.

Please.

Help me practice what I preach!

Pray this Lazaroo in grateful anticipation:

“And I declared that the dead, who had already died, are happier than the living, who are still alive. But better than both is the one who has never been born, who has not seen the evil that is done under the sun.”
(Ecclesiastes 4:3-4)

And so we’re blessed with another uplifting word from Solomon, Jesus.

For somebody so wise
he sure was in a snit of depression.

But he was almost right about one thing:

People in heaven are definitely happier
than those of us still on earth!

Pray this Lazaroo with faith in the God who can:

“I looked and saw all the oppression that was taking place under the sun: I saw the tears of the oppressed—and they have no comforter; power was on the side of their oppressors—and they have no comforter.”
(Ecclesiastes 4:1)

Oh, but Solomon was looking at the world

only under the sun, Jesus.
Viewing life without You.

You are the Comforter of the hurting, the downtrodden, the oppressed!

And You, dear LORD…oh, You, dear LORD!

are my Comforter.

Pray this Lazaroo with corrected vision:

“A person can do nothing better than to eat and drink and find satisfaction in their own toil. This too, I see, is from the hand of God, for without him, who can eat or find enjoyment?”
(Ecclesiastes 2:24-25)

This is how far Solomon’s wisdom can take him, Jesus

limited to what he observes under the sun.

True, everything comes from Your hand!

But there is so much more that is better

than eating, drinking
and liking my work.

Think beyond the end of your nose, as you pray this Lazaroo:

“What do people get for all the toil and anxious striving with which they labor under the sun?”
(Ecclesiastes 2:22)

Wise question, Jesus!

Kinda what Solomon was known for.

The sad reality is this:

A whole lot of what I do
isn’t going to amount to a hill of beans
ten years from now.

How foolish to spend myself for nothing!

Which makes me wonder:

What could I do
that would matter even more
ten thousand years from now?

Pray this Lazaroo with pure devotion:

“So my heart began to despair over all my toilsome labor under the sun.”
(Ecclesiastes 2:20)

It’s easy to overvalue what I do, Jesus.

It seems important to me, or I wouldn’t do it.

But when I check back on the results

I’m stunned to see how little of my work actually matters.

Still, my one comfort is this:

You judge the intent of my heart.

If what I’m doing is truly for You

You transform it into eternal, heavenly treasure.

Pray this Lazaroo with faith in the God who makes it count:

“I hated all the things I had toiled for under the sun…”
(Ecclesiastes 2:18)

An emotion that strong seldom happens early in life, Jesus.

It takes years of putting all a person’s energy
into first this thing, then that

to discover how much of it doesn’t amount to

a pile of rotting leaves.

O God! May that not be my fate!

Teach me to remember:

Only one life will soon be past.
Only what’s done for You will last.

Pray this Lazaroo, in awe:

“…the wise, like the fool, will not be long remembered…”
(Ecclesiastes 2:16)

Oh, really, Jesus?

Solomon missed it on that one, didn’t he?

He repeatedly tells us that he’s looking at everything

“…under the sun.”

But You’re the God who made the sun!

You’re under it, over it, beside it and all around it –
and a billion trillion other suns besides.

So that’s why we remember Solomon – the wisest man who ever lived –

till You –

nearly 3,000 years later. 😉

Pray this Lazaroo, trusting God’s design:

“This too is meaningless.”
(Ecclesiastes 2:15)

Yes it was, Jesus…

…and no, it wasn’t.

Meaningless to Solomon?

Sure. He was stuck with what he could see.

Because You had given him unprecedented wisdom

he supposed that if he couldn’t figure it out

there was nothing to it.

But meaningless to You?

No, no, never-never, huh-uh, uh!

Every person, plant, animal, behavior, event and substance

on or off this earth

has meaning to You!

Because You do nothing without purpose.

Pray this Lazaroo with bottomless trust:

“What then do I gain by being wise?”
(Ecclesiastes 2:15)

 Solomon was awfully wise, Jesus.

Your gift to him.

But that question wasn’t one of his wisest.

He was limiting his research to what he could observe
under the sun.

Admittedly, that’s all he could see

but it wasn’t all there is.

The greatest gain of all is doing what You tell me to do

whether it pays off on this earth or not.

Because in heaven

it will.
