Seek understanding, as you pray this Lazaroo:

“Be still before the Lord, all mankind…”
(Zechariah 2:13)

There’s a time to talk, Jesus.

Solomon told us so.

But there’s also a time to hush up.

Solomon told us that, too.

Without question, on countless occasions

You invite me to speak to You – even call to You.

But there are times when I’d be wise to hold my tongue and just listen –

as on those occasions when I start to complain.

You know what You’re doing.
I don’t.

Plead for understanding, as you pray this Lazaroo:

“How could I look your brother Joab in the face?”
(2 Samuel 2:22)

Abner had every reason to believe that even if it was self-defense

to kill Joab’s little brother would sign his own death warrant, Jesus!

But he was trying to reason with a kid who didn’t care.

All Asahel wanted to do was kill the great Abner.

What should I do when I’m caught between two really bad choices?

O Holy Spirit!

Please open my eyes!
Show me!

Pray this Lazaroo with white-hot fervor:

“Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding…”
(Proverbs 3:5)

It’s impossible to trust You with all my heart, Jesus…

while leaning on my own understanding.

My understanding trips me up because it’s woefully incomplete.

I don’t have the whole picture.
My brain’s not that big.

One day in heaven I’ll be like You.
Maybe then I’ll see it for what it is.

But that day is not yet.

Help me trust!

Pray this Lazaroo with burning zeal:

“None of the rulers of this age understood it…”
(1 Corinthians 2:8)

What a good thing to keep in mind, Jesus.

Just because somebody has risen to power
doesn’t mean they can grasp Your wisdom.

Just because a person is wealthy
doesn’t mean they can successfully advise me.

Just because someone is popular
doesn’t mean I should follow in their footsteps.

The poorest, least powerful, least-liked person among us

can accomplish great things
with eyes fixed on You.

Unashamedly plead with God as you pray this Lazaroo:

“I know the slander…”
(Revelation 2:9)

Thank You for understanding, Jesus!

because this isn’t merely people saying something negative about me.

This is slander – lying about me in a way that damages my reputation.

If my reputation is destroyed, my effectiveness is ruined.
People won’t believe me, won’t trust me.

Of course, that’s what happened when they crucified You, wasn’t it?

…until You rose from the dead!

Every time somebody slanders me, Jesus…

step in and resurrect my reputation!

Pray this Lazaroo in growing understanding:

“The reason I wrote you…”
(2 Corinthians 2:9)

There’s always a reason, isn’t there, Jesus?

Every person who does anything has a reason.
They may not admit it to anyone – perhaps not even to themselves –

but they always have a reason.

Still, the reason I do what I do and they do what they do

is not the ultimate reason for everything that takes place.

You Are the Prime Mover.
You make it – or permit it to – happen

or it doesn’t.

Pray this Lazaroo with excuseless humility:

“Reflect on what I am saying…”
(2 Timothy 2:7)

Not a bad idea with anyone, Jesus.

The better attention I pay to what someone says

the greater my understanding of their words
and of the person who speaks them.

Which is why, when it comes to Your Word

reflection is not an option.
It’s essential.

I’ve got to understand what You’re saying to me.

But even more importantly

I long to know better and better
the One saying it.

Pray this Lazaroo with a longing heart:

“Praise be to the name of God for ever and ever…He reveals deep…things…”
(Daniel 2:20, 22)

Yes You do, Jesus!

things too deep for me to

understand
grasp
fathom.

You’re the God of the deep!

You rule over the surface
but only You can plumb the deepest depths

because they were created
by You.

Deep isn’t deep to You.

Deep is as accessible to You
as a bowl of cereal is to me.

O God!

Show me the deep.

Face it…as you pray this Lazaroo:

“…words you cannot understand.”
(Ezekiel 3:6)

With more than a million words in the English language, Jesus

there are plenty I can’t understand.

With more than 6,500 spoken languages worldwide

the number of words I can’t understand is mind boggling.

It’s the words I do understand but don’t obey

that bother me.

Sure, there are some words in the Bible that I probably don’t truly grasp

but You make most of it so plain that misunderstanding

isn’t my problem.
