Open your heart, as you pray this Lazaroo:

“Before them…the sun and moon are darkened, and the stars no longer shine.”
(Joel 2:10)

I can hardly imagine an army of locusts so dense, Jesus…

that all the lights of the sky are blocked from sight
covered in a thick, undulating blanket.

No ordinary locust swarm, that.

You sent a plague of supernatural locusts on Your people

a terrifying invasion of epic proportions.

You warned them again and again!

But they ignored You until

it was too late.

Take warning, as you pray this Lazaroo:

“But Asahel would not stop…”
(2 Samuel 2:21)

Asahel was racing toward certain death, Jesus.

Abner warned him again and again.

Asahel wouldn’t listen
wouldn’t stop.

So he died.
Totally, his own fault.

You will only warn me so many times, Holy Spirit.

If I don’t stop, the consequences are on me.

Maybe it’s to make better choices.
Maybe it’s to end destructive friendships.
Maybe it’s to stop saying something.
Maybe it’s to change my behavior.

Help me listen!

Pray this Lazaroo with desperate desire:

“Having been warned in a dream…”
(Matthew 2:22)

Thank You for doing that for Joseph, Father.

I’d love You to do that for me!

Maybe You already have, many times.

But did I understand them?
If so, did I heed the warning?

If not, that might tend to reduce the number of warnings You give me in the future.

Oh, Jesus! Teach me how to recognize the difference

between an ordinary dream
and one imparting a message from You.

Pray this Lazaroo with earnest desire:

“…turning neither to the right nor to the left…”
(2 Samuel 2:19)

That can be a wonderful trait, Jesus

when I’m headed in the right direction.

No detours. No distractions. No time outs.

Straight for the righteous goal.

But it’s a terrible quality when I’m rushing down the wrong path

stubbornly refusing to listen to anyone
who warns me of the danger.

God grant me the wisdom to know when to listen

and when to plug my ears.

Open your heart, as you pray this Lazaroo:

“Does a bird swoop down to a trap on the ground when no bait is there?”
(Amos 3:5)

No, Jesus.

Birds aren’t that stupid.

But we Your people sometimes are.

Even though You’ve warned us repeatedly of the dangers of sin
we keep swooping down into Satan’s traps.

Your Word is full of advice, cautions, horrific accounts

but it’s as though we ignore all the signs:

STOP!
DANGER!
BRIDGE OUT!

because we think we know better than do You.

Pray this Lazaroo with catalytic dedication:

“He sold them to their enemies all around…”
(Judges 2:14)

Don’t ever sell me to my enemies, Jesus!

I know You won’t
because I’m not about to forsake You.

That’s a last-ditch action on Your part, isn’t it?

You only resort to it

when people take advantage of Your kindness
and ignore Your every warning.

Not me.

I hear You – loudly and clearly.

You’re good, loving, merciful, longsuffering.

But there’s a line I’d better never, ever cross.

I won’t.

Pray this Lazaroo in repentant devotion:

“Jesus sent him away at once with a strong warning…”
(Mark 1:43)

You’ve given me a few of those, Jesus.

Sometimes through the events of my life.
Sometimes through one of Your people.
Most often directly through Your Word.

The thing is…

I haven’t always heeded them!

O God!
Why?

I know who You are.
I know You love me beyond measure.

I have no excuse.

All I have is a determination to turn it around

while I can.

Pray this Lazaroo in fervency of spirit

“Brace yourselves…”
(Nahum 2:1)

When someone tells me to brace myself

I get a little tense, Jesus.

But when You tell me to brace myself?

LORD God Almighty!
I lock up, can’t function.

Except…

when You warn me to brace myself
You’re fighting for me, not against me!

giving me a heads up
so I can survive.

No amount of bracing myself can save me if You’re delivering the blow

but no weapon forged against me can prevail
if You’re my Defender.
