Pray this Lazaroo with sold-out surrender:

“‘Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness,’ and he was called God’s friend. You see that a person is considered righteous by what they do and not by faith alone.”
(James 2:23-24)

James isn’t saying I’m saved because of the good works I do, Jesus.

He’s saying if I have true faith, my good works will show it.

However, if I claim to have faith but do the opposite

my claim is false.

True faith is revealed
by what I do.

Pray this Lazaroo with pure devotion:

“…his faith and his actions were working together, and his faith was made complete by what he did. And the scripture was fulfilled that says, ‘Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness…”
(James 2:22-23)

How does anyone know I have faith in You, Jesus?

For that matter, how do I know I have faith?

It’s not my talk, is it?
Talk’s cheap.

It’s by my actions!

What I do and don’t do
provide a telling glimpse
into my heart.

Pray this Lazaroo in steadfast faith:

“To those who by persistence in doing good seek glory, honor and immortality, he will give eternal life. But for those who are self-seeking and who reject the truth and follow evil, there will be wrath and anger.”
(Romans 2:7-8)

Persistence is the key, isn’t it, Jesus?

An occasional good or bad deed doesn’t tell the whole story.

What I do or don’t do doesn’t save me.

But my behavior over time reveals

whether or not I’m saved.

Pray this Lazaroo with burning zeal:

“But because of your stubbornness and your unrepentant heart, you are storing up wrath against yourself for the day of God’s wrath, when his righteous judgment will be revealed. God ‘will repay each person according to what they have done.’”
(Romans 2:5-6)

So, Jesus…

people who appear to be getting away scot-free

are just piling up their punishment
higher and higher.

If I’m to be repaid according to what I’ve done

I’d better get busy
doing a whole lot of good!

Think beyond the end of your nose, as you pray this Lazaroo:

“What do people get for all the toil and anxious striving with which they labor under the sun?”
(Ecclesiastes 2:22)

Wise question, Jesus!

Kinda what Solomon was known for.

The sad reality is this:

A whole lot of what I do
isn’t going to amount to a hill of beans
ten years from now.

How foolish to spend myself for nothing!

Which makes me wonder:

What could I do
that would matter even more
ten thousand years from now?

Pray this Lazaroo with pure devotion:

“So my heart began to despair over all my toilsome labor under the sun.”
(Ecclesiastes 2:20)

It’s easy to overvalue what I do, Jesus.

It seems important to me, or I wouldn’t do it.

But when I check back on the results

I’m stunned to see how little of my work actually matters.

Still, my one comfort is this:

You judge the intent of my heart.

If what I’m doing is truly for You

You transform it into eternal, heavenly treasure.

Rejoice! as you pray your Lazaroo on this glorious Christmas day:

“…boasting of what we have and do…”
(1 John 2:16)

Why do we do that, Jesus?

Everything we have or do comes from You!

Better question:

Why do I do that?

Because – God help me! – I do.

I guess it’s because I want people to think well of me.

But why? I’m nothing but a dirty, rotten sinner saved by grace.

Your outrageous, inconceivable love

is the only reason my punishment in hell
has been switched to eternal joy in heaven.

Be observant as you pray this Lazaroo:

“…slaughter it at the place where the burnt offering is slaughtered before the Lord.”
(Leviticus 4:24)

At first this appears redundant, Jesus.

But it’s not.

You’re showing me that although what I do is important

so is where I do it.

I can do the right thing in the wrong place

and fail.

Or I might appear to succeed – but fail! –

because I’m not doing it where You need it most.

Wherever You want me, LORD!

There I’ll be.

Enlarge your perspective, as you pray this Lazaroo:

“King Solomon answered his mother, ‘Why do you request Abishag the Shunammite for Adonijah?’”
(1 Kings 2:22)

Solomon was appalled at his mother’s request, Jesus.

Had he granted it, it would have cost them their lives.

So why did she make such a foolish request?

One possibility: She wasn’t thinking.

But of course, that can’t be true.

She was thinking about one very small part
of a much larger picture

which, embarrassingly,

is what I do all day long.
