Pray this Lazaroo with sharpened awareness:

“Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy.”
(Acts 2:18)

Well, I guess that ends the debate about whether or not we still have prophets, Jesus.

Some of them are men
some of them are women.

That pretty much ends the sexism debate, too.

But it doesn’t end my need for discernment.

Not everyone who claims to be a prophet

is what they claim to be.

Pray this Lazaroo from the depths of your heart:

“Should it be said…”
(Micah 2:7)

Well…some things should be said, Jesus…

others not.

Much of the trouble I’ve endured over my lifetime

stems from getting those two mixed up.

Sometimes the need was there, along with the opening You provided

and I failed to speak up.

At other times…let’s just say it:

I should have kept my mouth shut.

Give me discernment in the moment, Holy Spirit!

with the courage to speak
or the self-control to shut up.

Pray this Lazaroo with horror:

“So they stood up and were counted off – “
(2 Samuel 2:15)

Sometimes it’s good to stand up and be counted, Jesus.

But not this time.

Because of the arrogance of their commanding officers

every one of these soldiers was about to die.

When the cause is just, I’m willing to stand up and be counted

even if it costs me my life.

But when ego, blindness or stupidity are afoot

please give me the wisdom to stay seated.

Pray this Lazaroo with laser-focused intent:

“They are full of…strife…”
(Romans 1:29)

Who needs that, Jesus?

I don’t.

Life’s too short for bickering, fault-finding, incessant criticizing.

So why do we do it?

For that matter

why do we put up with it?

I don’t know why, but some seem to enjoy it.

In a twisted way, it’s their entertainment.

I may not be able to stop them, Father

but I sure don’t want to be around them.

Grant me the wisdom required

to get away.

Pray this Lazaroo with full-on ardor:

“O God of my fathers: You have given me wisdom…”
(Daniel 2:23)

There’s no wisdom like Your wisdom, Jesus!

Human beings spout a form of wisdom
that is no wisdom at all.

It’s short-sighted, ultimately false
predicated, as it is, solely on what the eye can see.

But Your wisdom is eternal.

You take into account the whole scope of creation
from the very beginning through ages unknown.

Give me the wisdom of Your Big Picture, Father!

Every time.

Pray this Lazaroo, thirsting for God’s wisdom:

“…from his mouth men should seek instruction…”
(Malachi 2:7)

This Bible passage could be referring to You, Jesus

but it isn’t.

It’s referring to the office of priest.

You’re saying people should be able to go to the priest
and learn something important.

Of course, that important truth originates with You

but You expect the priest to be the one who conveys it.

Now that You’ve come, died and risen

all of Your followers have that responsibility

including me.

Beg God for understanding, as you pray this Lazaroo:

“Praise be to the name of God for ever and ever…He gives…knowledge to the discerning.”
(Daniel 2:20-21)

At first glance this hardly seems fair, Jesus.

Discerning people already possess significant knowledge.
Why load them up with more?

Is it because the more You give a discerning person

the more they do with it?

On the other hand…

even when You inundate a foolish person with countless blessings
all they do is ignore, disrespect or squander them.

Which am I?

Pray this Lazaroo…perceptively:

“The wise man has eyes in his head…”
(Ecclesiastes 2:14)

Doesn’t everybody, Jesus?

Apparently not.

It’s one thing to have the equipment

quite another to know how to use it.

How many times have I looked right at something

and had no idea what I was seeing?

But I wasn’t seeing, was I?

I was just a-lookin’
oblivious to what it meant.

God, please!

Grant me the wisdom to see where I’m looking
with these eyes in my head.

Pray this Lazaroo with earnest desire:

“Praise be to the name of God for ever and ever…He gives wisdom to the wise.”
(Daniel 2:20-21)

We so easily forget, don’t we, Jesus?

All wisdom comes from You.

True…everything else comes from You, too – which we also forget.

But without wisdom, who can succeed?
Who can truly – and lastingly – enjoy life?

When I act with wisdom, please help me acknowledge its Source

and in light of how many times I’ve missed the boat

give me more.

Pray this Lazaroo with Godly understanding:

“Solomon took a census of all the aliens who were in Israel, after the census his father David had taken…”
(2 Chronicles 2:17)

What are the things I’m doing that my dad did, Jesus?

Are they all good?
Are some of them bad?

Were some of them good for him
but not for me?

Please grant me the wisdom to discern which I need to stay with

and which I need to drop

along with the courage to act.
