Pray this Lazaroo in Holy Spirit-guided introspection:

“Woe to the city of blood, full of lies, full of plunder, never without victims! The crack of whips, the clatter of wheels, galloping horses and jolting chariots! Charging cavalry, flashing swords and glittering spears!”
(Nahum 3:1-3)

The city of Ninevah had it all, Jesus…

everything they needed to wreak havoc
on the weaker peoples around them.

How am I equipping myself, Father?

Is it all about being a blessing to others
or only about making things better

for myself?

Pray this Lazaroo with compassion:

“Woe to the city of blood, full of lies, full of plunder, never without victims!”
(Nahum 3:1)

That’s what got to You the most, wasn’t it, Jesus?

The victims.

Those who lost their lives due to the monstrous cruelty embedded in Nineveh’s culture.

Those who lost loved ones, grieving without relief.
Broken promises, broken homes, broken lives.

It was all about the victims then

it’s all about the victims now.

You’re the same – yesterday, today and forever.

Our suffering
continues to break Your heart!

Pray this Lazaroo with informed caution:

“Woe to the city of blood, full of lies, full of plunder…”
(Nahum 3:1)

People would expect a city full of plunder

to be in pretty good shape, Jesus!

But it’s the blood they’ve shed to get it
the lies they’ve told to keep it

that earn Your pronouncement of woe.

When You say, “Woe!”

I’d better say, “Woah!”

and quickly repent
stop harming others
stop telling lies

or I’ll discover firsthand
just how terrible Your woes can be.

Pray this Lazaroo with no-holds-barred surrender:

“Woe to him who says to wood, ‘Come to life!’ Or to lifeless stone, ‘Wake up!’ Can it give guidance? It is covered with gold and silver; there is no breath in it.”
(Habakkuk 2:19)

Is anything more important to me than You, Jesus?

If so, that’s an idol.

The thing is

I can claim You’re most important in my life

while putting someone or something
ahead of You.

If I’m lying to myself about this, please show me!

‘cause You smash idols.

Pray this Lazaroo with growing understanding:

“Woe to the city of blood…”
(Nahum 3:1)

Again, Jesus?

Again?

A scant 63 years before, You sent the prophet Jonah

to warn them that in 40 days You would destroy them.

They listened to You!
They repented!
You relented!

But now, within the span of one lifetime, they’re right back at it –

worse than ever.

They had their chance.

Their one chance is now gone
and they don’t care.

O God!

When You warn me
help me repent –

and stick with it.

Pray this Lazaroo in passionate indignation:

“Woe to him who gives drink to his neighbors, pouring it from the wineskin till they are drunk, so that he can gaze on their naked bodies!”
(Habakkuk 2:15)

They were doing that 2,600 years ago, Jesus

and they’re still doing it today.

But this isn’t merely about drunkenness, nudity and voyeurism, is it?

In that case, we might think it doesn’t apply to us.

This is about taking advantage of someone.

Now that…

may hit a little closer home.

Pray this Lazaroo with unrestrained allegiance:

“Tell the righteous it will be well with them, for they will enjoy the fruit of their deeds. Woe to the wicked! Disaster is upon them! They will be paid back for what their hands have done.”
(Isaiah 3:10-11)

Kinda sounds like I’m going to harvest what I plant, Jesus.

That being so…

I want to plant all the good I can possibly get in the ground
and keep pulling up all the weeds of my sin

that my sinful human nature keeps trying to sow.

Pray this Lazaroo with informed determination:

“Woe to you who live by the sea, you Kerethite people; the word of the Lord is against you, Canaan, land of the Philistines. He says, ‘I will destroy you’…”
(Zephaniah 2:5)

How does Your Word turn against me, Jesus?

It’s when I turn against Your Word, isn’t it?
That’s when utter destruction comes.

I’ll never turn against Your Word, Holy Father!

It’s a lamp to my feet
a light for my path
my comfort in great sorrow

my sure promise of eternal life.

Pray this Lazaroo with higher intent:

“Woe to him who builds a city with bloodshed and establishes a town by injustice! Has not the Lord Almighty determined that the people’s labor is only fuel for the fire, that the nations exhaust themselves for nothing?”
(Habakkuk 2:12-13)

When the purpose is evil, Jesus

it never stands.

Doesn’t matter how hard they work.
Doesn’t matter how smart they are.
Doesn’t matter how much money they spend.

Purify all my purposes, LORD!

If I’m going to exhaust myself
I want it to count for eternity!

Pray this Lazaroo in stunned gratitude:

“Woe to him who…establishes a town by crime!”
(Habakkuk 2:12)

I can’t even begin to imagine how many towns have been established by crime, Jesus.

It has to be a huge number.

But the point is this:

It didn’t pay off.
Not for the people who did it.

Oh, they may have appeared to prosper in the beginning
but the end is what matters –

and that was a different story.

Well…unless they repented!

In that case
You turn our woe…into “Woah!”
