“Slaves, in reverent fear of God submit yourselves to your masters, not only to those who are good and considerate, but also to those who are harsh. For it is commendable if someone bears up under the pain of unjust suffering because they are conscious of God.”

This command can’t have gone over well with slaves, Jesus.

In fact, there are a lot of Your commands
that require me to do what I don’t feel like doing.

There’s a time for everything, Jesus.

But when I claim it’s not the time to serve You
because I’m too busy serving myself?

It’s a spiritual crime, Jesus

to disobey those You’ve placed over me.

That’s a game-changer!

I will do my best to obey those in authority

who are obeying You.

This one’s hard to do, Jesus

whether the supreme authority is an evil dictator
or somebody I voted against.

But it has nothing to do with them, does it?

You command me to submit to them
for Your sake.

So for your sake – when it comes to preference –

I will.

But if they ever require me to disobey You

they can take a hike.

That’s a tall order, Jesus.

So many human authorities are corrupt.
Even more are completely in the wrong.

But You’ve commanded me to do it for Your sake.

I will.
For that reason only.

But this I know:

If human authorities require me to disobey You
You will be the first to tell me to disobey them

no matter what it costs
because I belong to You.

I find in myself a desire
that nothing in this world can satisfy.
Clearly, I’m meant for another world.

Help us at least begin to grasp the honor You have bestowed on us!
