Pray this Lazaroo with renewed awareness:

“Therefore, the LORD says: ‘I am planning disaster against this people from which you cannot save yourselves.’”
(Micah 2:3)

That’s true of every disaster, isn’t it, Jesus?

Unless You intervene
I can’t save myself from any of them.

The problem is, You step in for me so often

that I sometimes take Your help for granted.

It’s one thing for me to believe You will always be there for me

quite another to forget You’re involved.

O God!

May I be as faithful to You
as You are to me.

Pray this Lazaroo from the depths of your soul:

“The engulfing waters threatened me…”
(Jonah 2:5)

There aren’t many pleasant ways to die, Jesus.

Drowning isn’t one of them.

When the sailors threw Jonah into the sea during that raging storm

everybody thought he was going to drown
including Jonah.

There are times when I feel like I’m drowning, too

not in water
in problems.

But You keep rescuing me!

No, all my problems haven’t disappeared
and they won’t – not on this earth.

But last time I checked – by Your love, mercy and grace –

I’m still here.

Pray the words of this Lazaroo with renewed determination:

“…your deeds will return upon your own head.”
(Obadiah 1:15)

You’ve just given me powerful incentive, Jesus.

When I do good to others
good will be done to me.

Of course, what messes me up is when I do good to others

and they do bad to me.

I keep forgetting that they’re not the ones who repay me for the good I do.

You Are.

When the good I do is unto You
the good You do is unto me.

Sweet.

Take in the words of this Lazaroo and pray it like you mean it::

“…the strong will not muster their strength…”
(Amos 2:14)

What an eye-opening reminder, Jesus!

It’s not enough to be strong.
My strength has to be mustered.

Until I rise up in faith and do something with it
my strength is useless.

Unless You provide me with a huge battle to win
my strength has no point.

You’ve given me the strength to do everything I need to do

so I’m puzzled on those days when I feel weak
until I remember:

Your miraculous strength doesn’t kick in
till I act.

Pray the words of this Lazaroo aloud, in self-sacrificing faith:

“Before them fire devours…”
(Joel 2:3)

How do You want me to respond to that, Jesus?

When confronted by a blazing inferno
my instinct would be to run.

Although I’ve walked into a few fires I should’ve stayed out of.

On the other hand, what if someone is trapped in a building on fire?

Would you want me to risk my life to save theirs?
That’s what You did for me –

only You didn’t risk it.
You gave it.

How can I do less?

Pray aloud the words of this Lazaroo in mounting awe:

“I will respond to the skies, and they will respond to the earth…”
(Hosea 2:21)

What does that look like, Jesus –

when You send a message to me
through the skies?

Is it so obvious that everyone sees it –

tornadoes…hurricanes…
torrential rains and flooding…
unrelenting sun and drought?

Or might it be a sign from You intended only for me –

a beautiful cloud…the sliver of a moon framed by the trees
Your message of love sent through the song of a bird?

Next time I’m outside…

maybe I should look up.

Pray aloud the words of this Lazaroo…in the fear of God:

“…you have tested those who claim to be apostles but are not…”
(Revelation 2:2)

What an honor to be one of Your apostles, Jesus!

How terrible to fake it.

Nobody can pull that off, can he?

He can fool a few for a while, maybe.
but then he’ll be exposed.

You’ll make sure of it.

What about me, LORD?

Am I faking anything?
Is there any honor I’m trying to bestow on myself?

If I am, show me, so I can stop it.

Before You do.

Pray the words of this Lazaroo aloud, from the depths of your soul:

“Praise be to the name of God for ever and ever…”
(Daniel 2:20)

That’s the only praise that even begins to approach what You deserve, Jesus –

the kind that goes on and on
for ever and ever.

I should be praising You every day, throughout the day!

Not just when You do something I like
but for Your correction when I go off course.

for all You’re doing for me and those I love
seen and unseen

the good things I take for granted
and the countless things I won’t know anything about

till heaven.

Pray the words of this Lazaroo aloud, with yearning:

“…your love feasts…”
(Jude 1:12)

I love the sound of that, Jesus!

“Love feasts.”

How long has it been since I’ve experienced one of those?

Have I ever?

My guess is, it doesn’t have anything to do with

where it takes place
how many are present
how good the food tastes.

It’s the people, isn’t it?

It’s the way they treat one another

with consideration
thoughtfulness
forgiveness
gentleness
kindness
mercy
love

You know what?

I don’t think it’s possible to experience a love feast

without You.

Pray the words of this Lazaroo aloud, with earnest desire:

“So I opened my mouth, and he gave me the scroll to eat.”
(Ezekiel 3:2)

It’s one thing to read and hear Your Word, Jesus…

a whole ‘nuther matter to take it into the very depths of my being

accepting it as my own
allowing it to make me Your own

inviting it to become part of me
so I can become part of You

gladly surrendering myself to Your transformation
as I gradually, thrillingly, inevitably

become everything You created me to be.
