Pray this Lazaroo with unrestrained allegiance:

“Indeed, on every high hill and under every spreading tree you lay down as a prostitute.”
(Jeremiah 2:20)

Strong words, Jesus.

Hard to hear.
But even worse, hard for You to see:

Your people worshiping other gods
instead of remaining faithful to You.

That’s exactly how You view me

every time I put someone or something
ahead of obedience to You:

as a prostitute.

Help, LORD!

That’s not what I want You to see when You look at me.

Pray this Lazaroo with deep reverence:

“The world and its desires pass away…”
(1 John 2:17)

That’s so true, Jesus!

Some of the things
that once seemed overwhelmingly important to me

now matter little to nothing at all.

This world that feels so permanent

isn’t.

The more scientists discover…the less care we humans give it…

the shorter this earth’s lifespan is revealed to be.

But that’s not what’s likely to make it pass away, is it?

One day Your trumpet is going to sound!

and operation cleanup will begin.

Pray this Lazaroo in aware humility:

“The arrogance of man will be brought low and human pride humbled…”
(Isaiah 2:17)

Why do we get like that, Jesus?

It’s because of the generosity of Your blessings, isn’t it?

You load us up with good things

but instead of being humbly grateful to You
we act like we’ve done it ourselves.

Attractive people act like they self-designed their genes.
Talented people act like they gave themselves their abilities.

No wonder You have to take us down a notch!

Take warning! as you pray this Lazaroo:

“…God did not spare angels when they sinned…”
(2 Peter 2:4)

They had it all, didn’t they, Jesus?

They were with You in heaven!
They saw You, heard You, served You!

But then along came Satan

perhaps the most amazing of all the angels
who looked in the mirror one too many times
and let his pride get the better of him.

One-third of the angels bought into his lies.

May I never follow their horrific example.

Pray this Lazaroo with heightened intensity:

“…be like a gazelle…”
(Song of Songs 2:17)

Lover talk, Jesus.

Good stuff. Wow.

But as with most of this fascinating book

there’s a spiritual application too, isn’t there?

I can’t match the gazelle’s 50 mph speed –

almost, but not quite as fast as the cheetah –

which loves to dine on gazelle.

But maybe I can match the gazelle’s intensity

as it attempts to elude its hunter.

O Great God:

Enable me to escape from Satan’s relentless pursuit!

Pray this Lazaroo with self-aware humility:

“…rid yourselves of…all…hypocrisy…”
(1 Peter 2:1)

I hate hypocrisy, Jesus.

And others hate it in me.

Oh, I don’t think I’m a hypocrite! Not at all…

until someone I love –
or someone I don’t love as much as I should –

points it out.

My first response? Denial.

“I’m no hypocrite!”

But then, Holy Spirit, comes Your inner voice:

“Actually, they’re right.
You don’t mean to be a hypocrite
but in this instance, you are.”

Denial stops.
Correction commences.

Pray this Lazaroo with sold-out surrender:

“…a person may labor with wisdom, knowledge and skill, and then they must leave all they own to another who has not toiled for it.”
(Ecclesiastes 2:21)

Well, no, Jesus.

If unwise, it doesn’t have to be done that way.

Does it usually happen the way Solomon describes it? Yes.

But is that necessarily bad? No.

One of the joys of life is working hard

so I can pass the fruit of my labors on to those I love.

Pray this Lazaroo with lavish love:

“Love your neighbor as yourself…”
(James 2:8)

Easy to say, Jesus…

harder to do.

Some people are easy to love, even to sacrifice for.

Other people are a challenge-and-a-half.

Nor are You saying I should love them the way I like to be loved.

You’re saying I should love them
the way they want to be loved.

Wow.

What if they want to be loved in a way I don’t like?

You sure do stretch a person.

Pray this Lazaroo in grateful adoration:

“…in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.”
(Proverbs 3:6)

I do acknowledge You, Jesus.

But that’s not what the verse says.

I’m to acknowledge You in all my ways.

Only then do You promise to make my paths straight.

To acknowledge You isn’t merely to give You lip service, either.

It’s to admit that You’re the only one who knows.

It’s to confess that I can’t truly fulfill my purpose on earth

without You.

Pray this Lazaroo with God-given discernment:

“Moses was…testifying to what would be said in the future.”
(Hebrews 3:5)

Moses couldn’t have done that with any accuracy whatsoever, Jesus

unless You had revealed the future to him.

You alone know the future. Apart from You –

If anyone claims to be able to foretell what will happen

they’re guessing.

That goes for mediums, spiritists, false prophets, soothsayers

talk show hosts, politicians, pundits, authors
and highly-educated experts.

‘Cause a well-informed, thoughtful
carefully-researched educated guess

is still a guess.
