Pray this Lazaroo with faith in the God who can:

“…until the day dawns…”
(2 Peter 1:19)

That’s what every person who’s ever experienced a “night of the soul” longs for, Jesus:

Daylight.

In the physical world, I know how long night lasts…and ends.

But in the spiritual world
a night can last for a very, very long time.

In the agony of that experience I cry:

“Where do I find the strength to hang on ‘until the day dawns’?”

In myself, I can’t. But in You

I can.

Pray this Lazaroo with bottomless trust:

“The fig tree forms its early fruit…”
(Song of Songs 2:13)

So I guess that means there must be a late fruit too, Jesus

and an on-time fruit. 😉

But there has to be something special about the early fruit!

That first taste – so good and sweet
especially after a long time without.

Is that why You came up with the idea of a firstfruits offering?

For sure, You deserve it –
because all my “fruit” comes from You.

Pray this Lazaroo in grateful amazement:

“…Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect.”
(1 Peter 1:19)

Knowing that You would one day sacrifice Your Son, Father

You commanded Your people to offer lambs without blemish or defect

as atonement for their sins.

Of course, no animal blood on this earth could take away their sins.

You honored their sacrifices because they obeyed
pointing ahead to that day when Your sinless Son’s death

would pay for the sins of everyone who believes.

Oh, Jesus!

Thank You!

Pray this Lazaroo in thrilled anticipation:

“…the same fate overtakes them both.”
(Ecclesiastes 2:14)

That’s the way it looks to us down here under the sun, Jesus.

No matter how gifted and successful the wise person
no matter how evil and irresponsible the fool

both die.

Meaningless.
Depressing.

But that’s not how the story ends!

Thanks to what You did for me on the cross

my life on this earth is the first word
in the first chapter

of an adventure that has no end.

Pray this Lazaroo with sobered clarity:

“…his religion is worthless.”
(James 1:26)

What a blow that would be, Jesus!

To spend a lifetime thinking my religion is doing me good
that You’re pleased enough with me to take me to heaven

then find out that I’ve wasted my time and energy
that all my religious behavior and cherished beliefs

were dead wrong.

Which is why I’m not depending on my ideas, traditions and customs.

My only hope – and I know it to the bone –

is You.

Pray this Lazaroo with supernatural caution:

“…her house leads down to death…”
(Proverbs 2:18)

You’re warning me to watch out for the cheating spouse, aren’t You?

Thank You, Jesus!

Such a man or woman doesn’t usually enter my world with a sign around their neck that declares:

“Beware! I bring you death!”

But they should.

Any unrepentant wife willing to be unfaithful to her husband
any unrepentant husband willing to be unfaithful to his wife

only needs the next opportunity

to be unfaithful to me.

Pray this Lazaroo with pure devotion:

“…held in slavery by their fear of death.”
(Hebrews 2:15)

Death does that, Jesus

so long as I’m afraid to die.

Well…I am.

Some days a little
some days a lot.

I know better.

Because of my faith in You
I don’t have to fear death.

The moment I breathe my last here
I open my eyes there

with You
in heaven
forever.

That’s not the part I’m afraid of.

It’s the pain I may have to endure
to get there.

Pray this Lazaroo with pedal-to-the-metal commitment:

“…in reverence will I bow down…”
(Psalms 5:7)

Bowing down is an extreme sort of worship, Jesus.

It requires me to do something that many people find strange.

But I absolutely do revere You! It doesn’t matter what others think of me.

You are worthy of whatever physical display means something to You

But am I right in saying that You’d rather have me bowing to Your will in my daily life

than pressing my face to the floor?

Pray this Lazaroo with mature understanding:

“If he has done you any wrong…”
(Philemon 1:18)

Total strangers seldom do me wrong, Jesus.

It’s my friends, family, coworkers, neighbors
who wrong me the most.

They’re the ones with whom I try to figure out this thing called, “life.”

Sometimes their solutions run afoul of mine.

Of course, that shoe’s on my foot, too.

They probably think I’ve sometimes done them wrong
whether or not I agree.

Please help us let go of it!

and move on.

Pray this Lazaroo with total transparency:

“…it did not shut the doors of the womb on me to hide trouble from my eyes.”
(Job 3:10)

A person has to be in deep suffering, Jesus

to hate the day of their birth that much..

Job wished he’d never been born

wanted his birthday removed from the calendar.

Perhaps more people than I can begin to imagine

are able to identify with Job’s anguish.

which is precisely why You reveal the depth of his pain

in holy Scripture.
