Pray this Lazaroo with over-the-top trust:

“…refresh my heart in Christ.”
(Philemon 1:20)

There are a lot of ways I might try to get refreshed, Jesus:

take a shower.
down a delicious glass of iced tea.
experience the luxury of a good night’s sleep.

But nothing in this world compares

to the refreshment of my heart in You!

You fill me with spiritual energy

higher purpose
boundless hope.

To see You at work in my life and in the lives of those I love?

Priceless.

Pray this Lazaroo with faith in the God who can:

“…the slave is freed from his master.”
(Job 3:19)

Pretty fitting on this 4th of July, Jesus!

There came a day in the history of these United States
when we could no longer endure England’s rule.

But Job was referring to death –

which, because of his pain
looked mighty good to him at that time.

O God!

Help me truly, utterly, completely, irrevocably die
to my old sin master Satan

and walk in the freedom

of obedience to You.

Pray this Lazaroo with bottomless trust:

“Teach the older men to be…self-controlled…”
(Titus 2:2)

I have to confess, Jesus –

this one’s a surprise.

I don’t mean that older men shouldn’t be self-controlled.

They absolutely should!

But I would’ve thought you’d say that’s something the younger men need to learn.

Oh, wait a minute – you do say that – four verses later.

So why do you tell the older men first?

I guess it’s so they’ll be able to show the younger men
what self-control looks like.

Pray this Lazaroo in determined belief:

“…she continued to follow Mordecai’s instructions as she had done when he was bringing her up.”
(Esther 2:20)

But she was now queen, Jesus!

She didn’t have to do what Mordecai said.

Besides, he was only her cousin who took her in after the death of her parents.

But she had lived long enough under Mordecai’s care
to see that he was a true man of God.

O LORD!

May I be such a light for those around me!

Pray this Lazaroo with sold-out surrender:

“This is my gospel, for which I am suffering…”
(2 Timothy 2:8-9)

This is contrary to the prevailing wisdom, Jesus –

which says good people shouldn’t be persecuted.

But since when has the prevailing wisdom prevailed?

The wisdom of this world has failed times beyond counting.

By contrast, Your wisdom is eternal!

I’ve learned to trust You with every fiber of my being –

not only because You’ve proven Yourself time and again –

but because You alone

have the words of eternal life.

Pray this Lazaroo with lavish love:

“Malkijah son of Harim and Hasshub son of Pahath-Moab repaired…the Tower of the Ovens.”
(Nehemiah 3:11)

What an honor, Jesus!

These men restored this important tower
near Jerusalem’s Corner Gate –

“The Tower of the Ovens” –
so named because that’s where the city’s bread was baked.

Like so many faithful people in Your Church who tithe and serve

they didn’t have to be the ones who fed the people.

But they’re the ones

who made the feeding of Your sheep possible.

Pray this Lazaroo with outrageous adoration:

“Christ Jesus, who gave himself as a ransom for all people. “
(1 Timothy 2:5-6)

Those last two words, Jesus:

all people.”

Not merely the rich, famous or powerful.

all people.”

Not just deacons, elders and pastors.

all people.”

Not only the beautiful, talented and likable.

all people.”

You gave Yourself as a ransom

for poor people, nobodies and powerless
waiters, stockbrokers and nurses
ugly people, clumsy and obnoxious

and for me! – the least deserving of

all people.”

Pray this Lazaroo with pure devotion:

“…the Levites…took their places…”
(Ezra 3:10)

That’s what I desire, Jesus –

to take my place –
the one You’ve assigned to me
the one You’ve equipped me to fill.

No matter how good it looks

I don’t want somebody else’s place.
It wouldn’t be a fit.

Besides, I’d be blocking them from what’s theirs
and missing what’s mine.

So show me my place!

And if for some reason I keep missing it

just pick me up and put me there.

Face it…as you pray this Lazaroo:

“…all will be condemned who…have delighted in wickedness.”
(2 Thessalonians 2:12)

At its best, Jesus…

wickedness isn’t as good as advertised.

Fun? Yes, it can be.

Pleasure? For sure.

But it’s not quite all that.

So I have to hype and pretend
to make up for the oversell –

a glass of over-steeped iced tea
short six teaspoons of sugar.

But the worst part is how quickly it’s over

…when I’m left with the aftermath

…the emptiness

…and the consequences.

Pray this Lazaroo with measured caution:

“…using the cubit of the old standard…”
(2 Chronicles 3:3)

Things change, Jesus –

sometimes for the better –
but not always.

Many people who come into power immediately change everything

merely to fit their leadership style
or to make genuine improvements they believe in
or with an intent to erase the memory of their predecessor.

Sometimes the people embrace the changes

sometimes they tolerate them

and sometimes they get rid of the new leader
because they see straight through him.
