Pray this Lazaroo with deep reverence:

“Who is wise and understanding among you? Let them show it by their good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom.”
(James 3:13)

Once again I’m reminded, Jesus:

Talk is cheap.

It’s not enough that I know the truth.

I have to live it!

If it’s truth I’m living

I won’t be boastful or proud.
I’ll be grateful and humble.

That’s the good life to which You’ve called me –

one that’s safe for others to follow.

Pray this Lazaroo with pure devotion:

“Ask the former generation and find out what their ancestors learned, for we were born only yesterday and know nothing, and our days on earth are but a shadow. Will they not instruct you and tell you? Will they not bring forth words from their understanding?”
(Job 8:8-10)

What refreshing, humble words of wisdom, Jesus!

May I never be counted among the proud
who regard older saints with disdain

as though modern times
make their counsel irrelevant!

Technology changes.
People don’t.

The hard-won experience of the aged

is priceless.

Pray this Lazaroo with total transparency:

“But if you will seek God earnestly and plead with the Almighty, if you are pure and upright, even now he will rouse himself on your behalf and restore you to your prosperous state. Your beginnings will seem humble, so prosperous will your future be.”
(Job 8:5-7)

Bildad’s prediction in Job’s behalf came true, Jesus.

I don’t know what my future holds.

But this I believe:

If I seek You earnestly
if with Your help I remain pure and upright

I won’t have to worry.

Pray this Lazaroo in deeper understanding:

“Cain brought some of the fruits of the soil as an offering to the Lord. And Abel also brought an offering—fat portions from some of the firstborn of his flock. The Lord looked with favor on Abel and his offering, but on Cain and his offering he did not look with favor. So Cain was very angry…”
(Genesis 4:3-5)

When You correct me, Jesus

may I never react defensively.

Help me respond with a humble, passionate desire

to please You in everything I think, say and do.

Hold nothing back, as you pray this Lazaroo:

“Let everyone call urgently on God. Let them give up their evil ways and their violence. Who knows? God may yet relent and with compassion turn from his fierce anger…”
(Jonah 3:8-9)

The king of Ninevah was right, Jesus!

That’s exactly what You did.

How many times have You done that very thing
down through the years?

When I humble myself, turn from my wicked ways

and cast myself on Your mercy

You look into my heart

see the sincerity there

and relent.

Pray this Lazaroo in fervency of spirit:

“See, I will make you small…”
(Obadiah 1:2)

Yes, Jesus.

I’ve seen.
You can make me very, very small.

But that’s a good thing, right?

It is, if I accept Your discipline

humble myself

and totally surrender to You.

May I never rebel

when You do what You have to do
to correct me.

Keep me small in my own eyes, Father!

even if You bless me in the future

recognizing 100% of the time:

every good thing comes from You.

Pray this Lazaroo with faith in the God who can:

“Bold and arrogant…”
(2 Peter 2:10)

Bold is good, Jesus –

provided it’s accompanied by total dependence on You.

But when coupled with arrogance?

Bold is always bad –

sometimes immediately
sometimes later.

There are times when bold arrogance appears to work

but that’s only when there’s a long fuse

leading to the moment
when it blows up in their face.

Which is not to say timidity is the answer!

Why be timid

when humbly following You
enables me to be bold as a lion?

Pray this Lazaroo from the depths of your heart:

“By the decree of the king and his nobles: Do not let people or animals, herds or flocks, taste anything; do not let them eat or drink. But let people and animals be covered with sackcloth.”
(Jonah 3:7-8)

First of all, that’s downright impressive, Jesus.

I’ve never heard of covering animals with sackcloth.
None of the people’s sins was the animals’ fault!

Clearly, this king was over-the-top humbling himself before You.

No wonder You relented!

That’s an example I need to keep in mind.

Grasp it! as you pray this Lazaroo:

“He mocks proud mockers but shows favor to the humble and oppressed. The wise inherit honor, but fools get only shame.”
(Proverbs 3:34-35)

Much of my society has this reversed, Jesus.

They think proud mockers are strong, successful.
They envy them, aspire to be like them.

But the wise among us know better.

Today, their humility has brought them oppression

but tomorrow, eternal honor awaits!

If and when I’m forced to choose –

to have it today or have it tomorrow –

I choose forever in heaven with You!

Pray this Lazaroo with locked-in faith:

“Although I am less than the least of all the Lord’s people, this grace was given me: to preach to the Gentiles the boundless riches of Christ…”
(Ephesians 3:8)

Paul’s not merely being humble, Jesus.

He absolutely believes he’s less than the least of all Your people.

So let’s see…

if the great Apostle Paul has that opinion of himself

where does that place me?

Somewhere way, waaaaay beneath
the less than the least of all Your people!
