Pray this Lazaroo from the depths of your soul:

“Her mother-in-law asked her, ‘Where did you glean today? Where did you work? Blessed be the man who took notice of you! Then Ruth told her mother-in-law about the one at whose place she had been working. ‘The name of the man I worked with today is Boaz,’ she said. ‘The Lord bless him!’ Naomi said to her daughter-in-law.”
(Ruth 2:19-20)

Totally orchestrated by You, Jesus –

ancestors of Mary and Joseph…

and You!

Gotta love Grandpa Boaz and Grandma Ruth!

Pray this Lazaroo in wholehearted dedication:

“So Ruth gleaned in the field until evening. Then she threshed the barley she had gathered, and it amounted to about an ephah. She carried it back to town, and her mother-in-law saw how much she had gathered. Ruth also brought out and gave her what she had left over after she had eaten enough.”
(Ruth 2:17-18)

Such a work ethic, Jesus!

Such a heart to serve, to share, to honor her mother-in-law!

No wonder You chose her as your ancestral grandmother

many generations before Your virgin birth!

Pray this Lazaroo with a melting heart:

“As she got up to glean, Boaz gave orders to his men, ‘Let her gather among the sheaves and don’t reprimand her. Even pull out some stalks for her from the bundles and leave them for her to pick up, and don’t rebuke her.’”
(Ruth 2:15-16)

Boaz was so deeply touched by Ruth’s loyalty and character, Jesus

…that he responded with some deeply touching words of his own.

May I so live

…that others will be inspired by what I say and do!

Pray this Lazaroo with earnest desire:

“At mealtime Boaz said to her, ‘Come over here. Have some bread and dip it in the wine vinegar.’ When she sat down with the harvesters, he offered her some roasted grain. She ate all she wanted and had some left over.’”
(Ruth 2:14)

Oh, Your incredible generosity, Jesus!

Please help me remember

all the times You’ve given me what I’ve needed
with some left over.

Then show me the best way to share my leftovers

with those who don’t have enough.

Pray this Lazaroo in appreciative wonder:

“May I continue to find favor in your eyes, my lord,” she said. “You have put me at ease by speaking kindly to your servant—though I do not have the standing of one of your servants.”
(Ruth 2:13)

Hope. Gratitude. Humility.

No wonder You chose this woman
to be Your great-great-many times removed grandmother, Jesus!

She wasn’t even a Jew.

She was one of the hated Moabites!

No matter.

You chose her!

Just as You have chosen me.

Pray this Lazaroo from the grateful depths of your soul:

“May the LORD repay you for what you have done.”
(Ruth 2:12)

That statement is a double-edged sword, isn’t it, Jesus?

Boaz meant it as a blessing – and it was!
You did, in fact, repay Ruth’s beautiful spirit toward her mother-in-law.

But when I’ve sinned, that’s the last thing I want to hear!

I don’t want to be repaid for the wrong I’ve done.

I want forgiveness!

Let me rephrase that:

I need forgiveness!

And that’s what You purchased for me on the cross.

Pray this Lazaroo with respect and honor:

“…you left your father and mother and your homeland and came to live with a people you did not know before.”
(Ruth 2:11)

That’s the kind of thing people do in honor of You, Jesus!

Ruth did all of that to stay with her mother-in-law Naomi

out of respect for the woman she loved
and in honor of the God Naomi worshiped:

You.

You’re worth every big time price I pay

every courageous action I take in obedience to You.

Pray this Lazaroo in total allegiance:

“…what you have done for your mother-in-law since the death of your husband…”
(Ruth 2:11)

Boaz nailed it, Jesus.

It wasn’t what Ruth did for her mother-in-law while her husband lived.
That could have been out of love for her husband.

It was what she did for her mother-in-law after her husband died.
That was what demonstrated her love for her mother-in law.

Show me how to love others with Your love – for Your sake.

No other incentive needed.

Pray this Lazaroo in humble gratitude:

“…a foreigner…”
(Ruth 2:10)

Ruth isn’t the only one, Jesus.

I, too, am a foreigner.

This world is not my home!

Just about the time I forget that
behaving as though this world is it

You allow it
to rear its perverse, unfair, twisted head.

In deepest gratitude I lift my eyes back to You

my longing for heaven increased…doubled…tripled.

Only with You will I finally be at home.
Only with You will I know lasting rest, happiness, peace.

Pray this Lazaroo in utter amazement:

“…you notice me…”
(Ruth 2:10)

Ruth was stunned to be noticed by Boaz, Jesus.

She didn’t know You were at work
preparing his heart to be her husband

preparing her to become great-grandmother to King David
whose line extended all the way

to You.

But she was too humble to predict any of that!

Rise up in me with that same humility, Holy Spirit!

Knowing I don’t deserve to be noticed
being thrilled when –

because of Your love and mercy –

I am.
