Pray this Lazaroo in head-shaking amazement:

Why have I found such favor in your eyes…?”
(Ruth 2:10)

How refreshing is that, Jesus?

In this day of people pounding their chests, swaggering –

I’m so used to hearing:

“It’s about time!”
“I’m the best there is!”
“Check me out!”

But here’s Ruth, so unassuming

that when someone does something nice for her
she’s stunned, not comprehending –

the exact opposite of an attitude of entitlement.

No wonder You selected her to become

one of Your many-times-removed great grandmothers.

Pray this Lazaroo with burning zeal:

“I have told the men not to touch you.”
(Ruth 2:9)

Thank You for Your protection, Jesus!

Ruth was a young widow, all alone
putting herself at great risk while she worked in the fields.

But You provided Boaz, a man of standing, integrity and strength

to step in and insure her safety.

Then You piled Your blessings even higher on these two faithful people –

as You always do

for those who seek You with all their hearts.

Pray this Lazaroo with undiluted sincerity:

“…follow along after the girls.”
(Ruth 2:9)

Good advice, Jesus –

so long as the girls are headed in the right direction
so long as they’re doing the right thing.

In this case, they were…and Ruth was safe.

But sometimes the girls – and guys – are headed straight to the pit.
Sometimes what they’re doing is the wrong thing to do.

Which is why when I follow anyone – man or woman –

I’ve got to be doubly…triply
double-dog certain

they’re following You.

Pray this Lazaroo from the depths of your soul:

“Stay here with my servant girls.”
(Ruth 2:8)

That wasn’t a put-down, Jesus.

Boaz told Ruth to stay with his servant girls
because that’s where it was safe.

Bad things can happen to a woman gleaning alone
surrounded by men in a stranger’s field.

Bad things can happen to me, too.

Some already have.

Well, that is, they would have been bad…

except that I’m among Your servants

doing Your work

the only place where it’s eternally safe.

Pray this Lazaroo with unrestrained allegiance:

“So Boaz said to Ruth, ‘My daughter, listen to me…’”
(Ruth 2:8)

Little did he know, Jesus…

that this young woman he called, “daughter”
would soon become his wife.

There’s a lot I don’t know, too, Father.

Thank You for revealing parts of it to me
when I need to know it!

But some of what I wish I knew

You keep hidden.

I don’t know why, but I know this:

There’s a good reason.
And I trust You.

Pray this Lazaroo with burning zeal:

“…except for a short rest in the shelter.”
(Ruth 2:7)

I can’t work all the time, Jesus.

That’s not how You created me.

You made me in Your image

and You took a one-day-out-of-seven rest.

It’s instructive to note that Ruth took a short rest.

That’s all she – or I – need.

But it’s also important to remember

that she took advantage of a shelter
out from under the heat of the sun.

O God!

Will You be my Shelter?

Pray this Lazaroo in soul-deep gratitude:

“…She is the Moabite who came back from Moab with Naomi.”
(Ruth 2:6)

That was enough to permanently mark Ruth an outcast, Jesus.

The Jews knew the Moabites were descended from Moab
the son of Lot

born of an incestuous relationship
with his oldest daughter.

They were pagans, worshiping false gods
leading Israel away from You into sexual sin.

Yet You transformed her into one of Your ancestors – the ultimate insider!

just as You’ve transformed me
into Your child.
